Guatemala Missions Trip

In August, a ministry team of 12 led by Sara Delling, Eagles’ Wings team member, and Lisa Bourland, leader of The Father’s House in Henderson, KY, arrived in Guatemala City. The team had two major focuses during their week of ministry in the capital city – strengthening the church and loving on the children who live in the neighborhood encircling the city dump.

Sara, Lisa, and the team led worship (in Spanish), Bible teaching, and prophetic prayer ministry at five local churches. One of these churches has been serving as a refuge for those who lost their homes in the devastating volcanic eruption this spring. The team also had the opportunity to gather in a home located right outside the city dump for a “cell group”. It was here they met a woman who had been suffering from severe shoulder pain and limited movement in her hands and fingers. After a time of prayer, she was able to move her arm, hand, and fingers freely and without pain!

Guatemala City is home to one of the largest landfills in Central America. Thousands of guajeros (trash pickers) make a living for their families scavenging the tons of garbage that arrive daily. It is the children of these families that come to “The Father’s House – Guatemala City” children’s center. Sara, Lisa, and the team joined up with the children’s center in feeding and spending time with the kids, and brought supplies for the children’s center’s tutoring program. One day the team took 120 of the children for a day at the zoo! It was an experience that most of them would never have had otherwise.

In addition to the ministry of the week, a special ceremony took place between Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales and Israel’s Ambassador to Guatemala Mattanya Cohen. The team was privileged to attend and witness the moment as Israel’s Ambassador presented a medal of appreciation to President Morales for Guatemala’s decision to move their Israel embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Guatemala is the second country to make this decision, after the United States.
